Top Tips for Helping Your Child Learn a New Language

Learning a new language is a great way to boost your job prospects. By learning a new language your child can broaden their horizons and access opportunities that they would have never been able to before. They can wow prospective colleges, take up career opportunities abroad and even become an interpreter. We have teamed up with an international school in Hertfordshire to share a few tips on how you can help your child learn a new language.

Have “No English” Days

To help your child learn a new language you can get on board as a family and have set “no English” days where you must only communicate with each other in another language. Only tools such as Google Translate and dictionaries can be used, allowing your child to expand on their vocabulary and memory.

One-to-One Sessions

There are many reputable course providers and tutors that can help your child to learn an additional language. You may find this to be more effective than self-study which can lead to confusion. It’s easy to get mixed up with tenses, rules, and pronunciation which a tutor can easily fix.

TV Shows

TV, while heavily scrutinised, can be great for learning a new language. Foreign TV shows often have subtitles which viewers can follow, allowing them to make connections and build their own dictionary. This is particularly useful when there are multiple seasons of a show as there is lots of material to learn from.

Speak in Your Mother Tongue

If English isn’t your child’s first language, speaking in their mother tongue can help them to become fluent at speaking in their language. This can help to jog their memory and bring their language skills up to scratch, allowing them to communicate with others in their family.
